UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL LITERACY
ZURI: I don’t understand why everyone keeps saying digital literacy is important. I already know how to use my phone and social media. Isn’t that enough?
FRANK: Not really. Using a phone is just the basic level. Digital literacy is more about how you use technology, not just that you can use it.
ZURI: What do you mean? I can search things on the internet, chat with friends, and watch videos. That seems like enough to me.
FRANK: Think about this, when you search for information, how do you know it’s true?
ZURI: I just read what comes up. Why wouldn’t it be true?
FRANK: That’s the problem. Not everything online is accurate. Some websites spread false information, and if you don’t know how to verify sources, you can easily be misled.
ZURI: Okay, I didn’t think about that. But still, that doesn’t seem like a big issue.
FRANK: It can be. Imagine making a decision based on wrong information—about health, money, or even news. It can have serious consequences.
ZURI: That makes sense. So digital literacy is about checking information?
FRANK: That’s one part of it. Another big part is online safety. Do you use the same password for many accounts?
ZURI: Yes… it’s easier to remember.
FRANK: That’s risky. If one account gets hacked, all your accounts could be exposed. Digital literacy teaches you how to protect your data.
ZURI: Wow, I didn’t know that. I thought hacking only happens to big companies.
FRANK: No, anyone can be a target. Even clicking the wrong link can expose your information.
ZURI: Now I’m starting to see why this matters. Is there more?
FRANK: Yes. Communication is also important. The way you speak online matters. Messages can be misunderstood easily, and people sometimes forget to be respectful.
ZURI: That’s true. I’ve seen people argue a lot online.
FRANK: Exactly. Being digitally literate means knowing how to communicate clearly and responsibly.
ZURI: So it’s not just about technology, it’s about how you behave and think when using it.
FRANK: Exactly. It’s about being smart, safe, and responsible in the digital world.
ZURI: I guess I have more to learn than I thought.
FRANK: We all do. Technology keeps changing, so digital literacy is something
we keep improving over time.
