Introduction

Located in northern Tanzania, Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous wildlife destinations in the world. The Meaning of “Serengeti”

Location and Accessibility

Serengeti National Park is located in northern Tanzania and forms part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, which extends into neighboring Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve. The park lies close to other famous tourist attractions such as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park.

Most visitors reach the Serengeti through:

-Domestic flights from Arusha or Dar es Salaam.

-Road safaris from Arusha through Ngorongoro.

-Chartered safari flights to various airstrips inside the park.


The Great Migration

The Serengeti is globally famous for the Great Migration, a massive movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest accompanied by zebras and gazelles. The animals move in search of fresh grazing and water throughout the year.

This migration is considered one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth. Visitors can witness dramatic river crossings, predator hunts, and enormous herds stretching across the plains.

The migration cycle changes depending on the season:

  • December to March: Southern Serengeti calving season
  • April to June: Movement toward central and western Serengeti

Best Time to Visit

Serengeti can be visited throughout the year, but the best time depends on what visitors want to experience.

  • June to October

This is the dry season and one of the best times for wildlife viewing because animals gather around water sources.

  • December to March

This is the calving season in southern Serengeti, where thousands of wildebeest give birth. Predator activity is also very high during this period.

  • July to September

This is the peak season for witnessing dramatic Mara River crossings in northern Serengeti.
