Mafia Island

Mafia Island is a coastal destination in Tanzania's Indian Ocean, about 120 kilometres south of Dar es Salaam. It is part of the Mafia Archipelago and is best known for its marine life, coral reefs, beaches, whale shark experiences, diving and the Mafia Island Marine Park.


Where Is Mafia Island?

Mafia Island is located in Tanzania's Pwani Region, opposite the Rufiji Delta. The main town is Kilindoni, while Utende is one of the main areas for tourism and access to the Mafia Island Marine Park.

The main island is approximately 48 kilometres long and 17 kilometres wide at its widest point.

The marine park covers parts of Mafia Island and surrounding islands and waters. It is one of Tanzania's important protected marine areas.

Best Time to Visit Mafia Island

Mafia Airport is located near Kilindoni.
