Mwanza Travel Guide

Mwanza combines wildlife, islands, huge granite rocks, lake scenery, culture, food and city life in a way that feels very different.  The official Tanzania Tourism Board now includes Mwanza among the country’s urban tourism destinations, highlighting its food, crafts, nightlife and attractions around Lake Victoria.  Known as the Rock City, Mwanza has a landscape that immediately gives the city its personality.  Why Visit Mwanza? The city is strategically positioned for exploring parts of northwestern Tanzania. It can serve as a base for trips towards the western side of the Serengeti. There is Rubondo Island National Park that offers a completely different kind of wildlife experience on Lake Victoria.  For travellers who have already experienced Tanzania's famous northern destinations, Mwanza offers something different: less conventional urban tourism with nature and wildlife. TANAPA currently describes it as covering more than 30,000 km² and featuring the Rufiji River, extensive woodlands, floodplains and wetlands. The remaining Selous Game Reserve covers approximately 18,000 square kilometres and remains under the management of the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA). The History of Selous The area received formal protection in 1896 during the German colonial period. In 1922, it became known as the Selous Game Reserve, named after Frederick Courtney Selous, a ...
